Laser Scanning Should Be Required for Every School Building; New Technology Makes It Possible
When it comes to active-shooter events like school shootings, every second counts. “Studies have shown that as many as four shots can be fired in one second,” says Agent Clint Norris, of the New Mexico State Police Crime Scene Team in Las Cruces. “And those four shots could mean four lives. It could mean four different kinds of injuries that would have their own consequences. So even one second is a tremendous amount of time.” Continue reading

On-Demand Webinar Shows How to Clear Scenes Fast with Laser Scanning
3D laser scanning is a proven way to document crime and crash scenes. With a push of a button, you can “freeze” the scene in time with millions of high-accuracy points and panoramic photography. The resulting data is a true color, extremely detailed, rich, vivid and immersive 3D environment that provides a true and accurate representation of your scene before any evidence has been moved. A new on-demand webinar shows how recent innovations make laser scanning an even faster and more powerful tool for clearing scenes quickly and easily. Continue reading

Can the Newest Compact Laser Scanners Deliver on Scene Reconstructions?
By Ryan Rezzelle
A forensic investigator recently posted the following concern on social media: "We have three of the big Leica scanners, and when we looked at the smaller scanners, they don't have the ability for detail the large ones do. This is important to do detailed scans of ballistic damage and blood spatter for accurate reconstruction purposes." I can appreciate your sentiment as I started out on one of the "big" Leica scanners myself. I loved the durability, reliability, and accuracy. Smash cut to modern technology, however, and there are two small laser scanners that are having a big impact in public safety. Continue reading

Key Trends in Laser Scanning for Public Safety
Sergeant David J. DeLeeuw with the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office still remembers what it was like to scan a homicide scene using one of the early laser scanners, with their large batteries, laptop, power adapters and numerous cables. Today, he is fast and efficient with the Leica ScanStation P40, but he sees even better things on the horizon. Continue reading

Video: How the Leica RTC360 Laser Scanner Changes the Game for Public Safety Professionals
A 3D laser scanner that captures a full scene scan plus HDR imagery in 1 minute and 26 seconds? That tracks movement and objects within the scene in real-time so it understands how each scan fits in with the next? One that automatically removes the noise generated by people and vehicles moving through a scene, and registers scans in the field in real-time so that you can share 3D exhibits at the push of a button? Continue reading

Laser Scanning with Leica ScanStation Provides Critical Insight on Fire Scene
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Criminalistics Laboratory has used laser scanning since 2011, when the crime lab purchased a ScanStation C10. In 2017, the lab added a ScanStation PS40 to their equipment profile to enhance their ability to capture crime scenes. In their first year of deploying the PS40, they had an opportunity to scan this fire scene in which extensive damage was caused to an apartment complex. Continue reading
