NIJ Funded Research Study Completes Evaluation Of Leica ScanStation 3D Laser Scanner

RTI International is one of the world’s leading research institutes and an independent, nonprofit organization that provides research, development, and technical services to government and commercial clients worldwide. Its Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (FTCOE) is a National Institute of Justice funded program, which partners with leading universities such as Virginia Commonwealth University‘s (VCU) Department of Forensic Science.
RTI and its partners identify and evaluate technology needs in the forensic field and provide effective technology transition workshop content to improve dissemination of information and best-practices to support the effective transition of new forensic technologies to the field and laboratories.
The FTCOE works with the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center and the Office of Law Enforcement Standards at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The National Center serves as the clearinghouse for technology information.
The FTCOE and its partner VCU recently completed a year-long comprehensive technology evaluation of the Leica Geosystems ScanStation C10 3D laser scanner. For this research project the organizations actively sought out experienced law enforcement users of the Leica ScanStation who had deployed the technology on a large number of diverse scenes. In December 2013, the FTCOE hosted a national webinar for public safety professionals featuring a presentation by one of these experienced Leica ScanStation users.
The presentation, called, “Crime Scene Mapping: A User’s Perspective on the Leica ScanStation C10,” can be viewed on-demand here:
