The National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund will soon begin the solemn process of engraving new names into the marble walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Each of the 275 names being added this year represents an officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
The names of the officers will be formally dedicated during the annual candlelight vigil that takes place every May 13 in conjunction with National Police Week. Each year, approximately 20,000 law enforcement professionals, survivors and supporters gather at the monument to honor the sacrifice these officers made for their communities. Those who cannot experience the vigil in person can watch a live webcast (8 p.m. EST) and light a virtual candle.
